Jabez Bancroft

  General Notes:

As noted on email from Jarlath Bancroft who has followed the Bancroft family.
Jabez was a very interesting character, who was a prolific collector of butterfiles, wild birds eggs and an amateur taxidermist.
After his first wife died he remarried and Harriet Pick didn't find out about her until somewhere around 1960.
1841 census aged 7 living at home at Wins Delf, Ingrow (from Jarlaths' 1841 Census)
1861 census shows family (3 boys) living at WINNS WOOD HOUSES/HAINWORTH.
His profession was COMM Clerk
1881 Census says he is a time keeper (chemical) living at West Street Huddersfield
In 1891 census shows him living at Carlton St/ Kly and married to Elizabeth aged 46 from Gloucestshire.
Note 11/26/07 Pam's notes said living at 14 Beatrice St, Beechcliffe
6/30/09 changed birth date from 4/13/ to 4/18 in line with EO Bancroft and J Pam Coburn
Changed christening from 6/25/ to 6/23 in line with IGI
Added 8/28/09 1871 Census he was living further along the road nearer Keighley at a place called 'Lower Utley' and his occupation was listed as 'Ale & Porter Dealer'.

  Research Notes:

Birth and death dates in engineering "bible". Eli's family records passed onto Steve Pick. I made an error in showing 4/1/1897 as April 1st instead of Jan 4th. However, Jabez has death as 8 Feb 1897 in Keighley in some information written by Jarlath Bancroft.

• Court Hearing: Leeds Mercury - Yorkshire Assizes-Ackroyd v Hargreaves, 14 Feb 1882, Nelson. ²⁸⁹ It appears Jabez bancrofts was leasing a ground floor for storage in Nelson when he was an ale and porter merchant, but had gone bankrupt. While renting he paid
£2/10/- a month and later with more space £3/4/- a month
