bullet  General Notes:

Abbreviated summary. Born on Walney. Parents moved back to Yorkshire for a time. Thinks she attended same school as Wilfred Pickles in Halifax around 7 years of age. Came back to Walney went to Latona Street school (Vickertown). Also seems as though she was at Ocean Rd. Went to the Grammar school (maybe it was not called that then but was housed in Alfred Barrow school) played hockey for school. Did science and went onto Leeds University to get a degree in Physics and then teaching.

First job in Bournmouth for a few months, Then Stanley, Yorkshire and then back to Barrow. Taught at Barrow Island. There is a reference letter from the Barrow Island Headmaster, Mr Jackson, showing that she started Aug 26th 1929 and taught 7 to 11 year olds. Originally she taught boys and later mixed classes. Her artistic skills were noted and her knowledge of Botany. She was also very good at handling backward children. She stopped teaching there 23 July 1937.

After kids were born just did the odd day of supply teaching until around 1952 when she taught maths at the Girls grammar school part time until her retirement in 1964.

A keen painter and produced many water colours, especially later in life. Loved badminton and was president of St Mary's Walney. Played until fairly old (62?)

Enjoyed a large garden and was a tireless worker in it until not long before she died. She seemed expert on the names of many flowers and plants. Spent many winters in Spain caravaning with Bill. He did the diary and she did the sketches. They spent a lot of time in retirement holidaying in the "van".

In her 70's she suffered badly for three years with arthritis until she had a hip replacement. Made several visits to see son, Stephen in Canada, Spain and Belgium.
